Transformed and Empowered: Reflecting on the Inaugural Black Queer Creative Summit

It's been a week since I returned home from the inaugural GLAAD Black Queer Creative Summit, and its impact still lingers within me. When a friend shared the application with me, my initial thought was that I rarely receive invitations to such events. Despite this, I decided to submit my application anyway. The surprise of being accepted was quickly replaced with a moment of reflection, when I realized I do belong at the summit and there is a deeper significance in this opportunity.

Many times, in life, we encounter barriers and challenges that can lead us to question our own worthiness. However, my experience at GLAAD's Black Queer Creative Summit served as a powerful reminder that my voice and perspective hold genuine value. As the weekend began, it became very clear that I had played a pioneering role in various aspects of my life. I've been the first to shatter barriers and champion innovation within my community for years. This recognition compelled me to address the negative self-doubt that can sometimes plague us when we venture beyond society's expectations.

One of these aspects is my biracial identity. I've frequently found myself navigating issues from multiple perspectives. My personal journey is a unique one, characterized by both accomplishments and obstacles. Nonetheless, it has also cultivated within me a deep sense of resilience, creativity, and empathy. However, today, our attention isn't directed toward my experiences; rather, it's centered on the transformative impact of the BQCS.

The BQCS served as a platform for black and queer creatives, offering them not only the chance to share their experiences but also to connect with those who truly grasp the intricacies of this intersectionality. It provided a space where we could openly discuss the challenges we encounter, celebrate our achievements, and inspire one another to keep pushing boundaries. Moreover, it offered us the opportunity to interact with and seek advice from successful industry insiders who have walked in our shoes. The panel discussions featured a diverse array of accomplished individuals, including producers, directors, content creators, musicians, and representatives from various partnerships and companies. The abundance of knowledge, personal stories, and support exchanged during the event beautifully demonstrated the strength and power of our community.

From the moment I stepped off the plane, my experience was nothing short of exceptional. GLAAD had our backs every step of the way, from arranging car services to our stay at the Sofitel in Beverly Hills. We didn’t have to think about anything except for immersing ourselves in culture and creativity.

Being among the first to attend this summit was undeniably special. We were the pioneers, the beta testers, and it's now our responsibility to share our newfound wisdom and experiences with the world and our community. Now I can’t lie, initially I was filled with self-doubt, even age-shaming myself because I noticed attendees younger than me. However, as the weekend unfolded, I learned that age is just a number. I met people in their 40s and 50s who were starting their journeys, reaffirming that it's never too late to begin. The time to pursue your dreams is now. Every attendee had a unique path into the industry, whether through formal education, learning on set, or self-starting online. The beauty of the weekend was the diversity of experiences and stories, proving that there's no one-size-fits-all route to success.

The theme of the BQCS, centered around the concept of "community," and it struck a chord with me. The human desire to belong, to find our place in a group or community, is something we all experience. This past weekend's experience illuminated a crucial lesson: sometimes, you must take the initiative to build your own community. As someone relatively new to the TV and film industry, I've often found myself knocking on doors, hoping someone would recognize my potential. However, the summit's theme underscored the importance of creating your own community and support network. In an industry with over 18,000 registered directors and over 8,000 registered producers (I may not know the exact percentage that represents the Black community), but it's a testament to the wealth of talent and potential collaborators out there.

The message was clear: instead of waiting to be chosen, empower yourself to build your own team, create your own path, and collaborate with those who share your vision. In the vast landscape of creative professionals, there are countless individuals willing to work together to bring fresh ideas to life. The weekend served as a powerful reminder that we have the capacity to shape our own destiny and find like-minded partners to help us along the way.

I could continue recounting the events of the weekend, but I'm currently in the process of responding to emails and DMs from the inspiring people I had the privilege to meet, all of whom are eager to collaborate and offer their support. However, I want to emphasize this: being the first doesn't automatically translate to being the best. While breaking new ground is a significant achievement and comes with moments of pride, it also carries with it challenges and responsibilities.

Now, people will look to us for guidance, answers to their questions, collaboration, and connections. Many have inquired about how to participate in this summit next year. The answer is straightforward: keep creating, building, and making connections. If someone says “no”, keep persevering until someone says “YES”. Apply for opportunities, create your content, and shine in your own unique way. Follow GLAAD, follow Gilead Sciences, and most importantly, follow DaShawn Usher, the visionary behind this remarkable event. He created a safe space that connected our community, and we owe him our gratitude. We love you DaShawn and you must be protected at all costs. Thank you for persisting until "no" became a resounding "YES."

Once more, I find myself forever transformed, filled with inspiration and motivation to share our narratives, keep blazing trails, and, above all, to consistently rely on my community.
