Detoxing My Social Media Feed

If you can't beat the algorithm, why not join it.

In the current digital age, our lives are intertwined with social media platforms, which serve as conduits of both human connection and technological communication. The internet offers an abundance of services and opportunities, from e-commerce to remote work, and even dating. However, the overreliance on technology and the constant barrage of information it provides is a double-edged sword, as it can lead to both emotional and mental exhaustion.

During the recent unrest surrounding the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests, I found myself feeling drained and enervated by the constant flow of negativity on my social media feed, with a seemingly endless stream of news about the deaths of black men and celebrity gossip. I realized that I needed a break from the constant negativity and resolved to put my phone down. As someone who relies on social media for business purposes, however, deleting my accounts was not a viable option. Instead, I decided to evaluate my personal engagement on social media, taking stock of what I was clicking on and commenting on.

I soon discovered that the posts that appeared on my feed were determined by an algorithm that was based on my previous interactions and preferences. Rather than fighting against the algorithm, I decided to use it to my advantage. I started being more mindful of the content I engaged with and made a conscious effort to seek out positive, uplifting, and motivational posts. Within a week, my social media feed was transformed, and I was surrounded by an abundance of inspiring quotes and fashion content.

However, I soon realized that there was still more work to be done. Despite the positive changes to my feed, I was still being bombarded by the occasional post that was filled with fake news, violence, and ignorance. I realized that the key to a more positive social media experience was to change not only the content I engaged with, but also the people I followed and interacted with. By carefully curating my network, I was able to cultivate a social media environment that was supportive, empowering, and uplifting. In conclusion, detoxing your social media feed can bring immense benefits to your mental and emotional well-being. By becoming aware of your own personal algorithm and controlling the content that you engage with, you can curate a feed that is uplifting and motivating. It's a simple and practical solution to counteract the negativity that often pervades the internet. Take a step back, evaluate your social media habits, and create a digital environment that brings positivity and joy into your life. With a little effort, you can transform your social media experience into a source of inspiration and happiness.
